ADVANCED YOGA STUDIES
 
2010 Program
(200-hr RYT training)
 
SESSION I & II – 03/27/10 – 11/12/10
 
OVERVIEW - 
 
The Advanced Yoga Studies (AYS) program has been specifically designed to exceed the 200-hour Teacher Training program standards for registration with the Yoga Alliance (www.YogaAlliance.org).
 
The total program, which includes both Sessions I and II, comprises over 240 total hours of instruction in training, teaching methodology, yoga techniques, yogic philosophy and anatomy. 
 
“Session I” begins March 27, 2010 and ends on July 16, 2010.
 
“Session II” beings on July 24, 2010 and ends on November 12, 2010.
 
This is the first year the program will be offered at Brentwood Yoga Center. 

Brentwood Yoga Center is a strategic teaching partner of Downtown Yoga (www.pleasantonyoga.com), a 200-hr Yoga Teaching School – registered with Yoga
Alliance. (www.yogaalliance.org)
 

 
WEEKEND SCHEDULE  - (Saturday & Sunday):
 
March 27th & 28th, 2010
2:00 p.m. – 6:30 p.m. (includes 1/2 hour break)
 
Developing Your Home Practice
 
Learn how to safely and appropriately structure and support a daily home yoga practice. 
This weekend focuses on how to create a space and find support to make yoga an integral part of your daily life.
 
April 24th & 25th, 2010
2:00 p.m. – 6:30 p.m. 
 
The Yoga of Movement - Vinyasa & Breath in Asana
 
Synchronize breath and movement to find stillness in the poses.  Learn Sun Salutations (Surya Namaskar) and variations.  Recognize the importance and ease that comes with using the breath to move into and out of the poses.
 
May 22nd & 23rd, 2010
2:00 p.m. – 6:30 p.m. 
 
Hips and Shoulders – The support structures
 
The Hips and Shoulders are the support structures.  Find release, freedom, support and greater range of motion and expression.  This weekend will focus on poses to release binding in the hips and shoulders – and create a greater sense of ease and grace.
 
 
June 26th & 27th, 2010
2:00 p.m. – 6:30 p.m. 
 
Spirals and Twists – The evolving-revolving pose
 
Asanas (poses) utilize spirals and twisting to lengthen, extend and expand not only the body, but the mind as well.  This weekend will focus on twisting poses and the spirals that exist within the body.  Evolve and revolve.

The Anatomy of Yoga – Part I
 
Learn Anatomy from a yogic perspective.  The first 8-week session will focus on the spine, anatomy of respiration and how they relate to asanas.  Each class will include asana practice with a focus on the anatomical area discussed.
 
 
Wednesday – Part B (8 weeks)
May 26th – July 14th, 2010

The Anatomy of Yoga – Part II
 
Learn Anatomy from a yogic perspective.  The second 8-week session will continue on the human form extending to arms, hands, legs, feet and head.  Each class will include asana practice with a focus on the anatomical area discussed.
 
 
Friday – Part A (8 weeks)
April 2nd, - May 21st, 2010

Introduction to Standing Poses, Forward Folds and Inversions
 
Learn the foundations and principles behind all standing poses, forward folds and inversions including headstand (Sirsasana) and shoulderstand (Sarvangasana).  
 
 
Friday – Part B (8 weeks)
May 28th – July 16th, 2010
7:00 p.m. – 9:00p.m. 
 
Introduction to Backbends, Twists and Restorative poses
 
Learn the foundations and principles behind backbends and twists.  We will also cover restorative poses during this session.  
 
SESSION II (16 weeks) begins on Saturday – July 24th, 2010 and ends on Friday, November 12th, 2010.

Saturday – Partner Yoga Practices
Sunday – Exploring the Chakras 
 
Saturday’s focus will be on working with partners in supportive and complimentary poses.  Use each other’s body weight and support as grounding and leverage.  Sunday’s focus is on exploring the chakras – the wheels of energy within the body.
 
 
August 28th & 29th, 2010
2:00 p.m. – 6:30 p.m. 
 
The Art of Sequencing
 
This weekend will focus on the art and science of sequencing poses for maximum benefit in all types of practices – both energizing and restorative practices.  Learn when to use specific poses as counter and complimentary poses in a practice
 
 
September 25th & 26th, 2010
2:00 p.m. – 6:30 p.m. 
 
Therapeutic Yoga – Yoga for Ailments, Prenatal & Special Needs
 
Learn the proper approach to dealing with injuries or special needs.  General yoga practices are sometimes not appropriate for all students – especially those involved in any type of physical recovery or ailment.  However, utilizing proper yoga techniques can ease pain and speed recovery.   
 
 
October 23rd & 24th, 2010
2:00 p.m. – 6:30 p.m. 
 
Arms and Inversions
 
Handstands, Arm balances and inversions can be some of the most challenging poses and yet the most rewarding when practiced.  These poses build confidence, strength, stamina and build concentration.  This weekend will focus on making arm balance and inversions accessible even to the beginner.

July 28th – September 15th, 2010

Sequencing, Adjustments and Assisting
 
This class is critical for those intending to become yoga teachers.  Learn various methods for “adjusting” students' poses (verbal, non-verbal).  Also learn the proper attitude and protocol for assisting another Yoga Teacher.
 
 
Wednesday – Part B (8 weeks)
September 22nd – November 10th, 2010
7:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. 
 
Philosophy, Ethics and Meditation
 
Learn the roots of yoga from selected texts; explore ethics and foundations of yogic principles.  Practice asanas with yoga history in mind and heart, and then practice meditation for up to 30 minutes each class.
 
 
Friday – Part A (8 weeks)
July 30th – September 17th, 2010

ADDITIONAL CLASS SCHEDULE
 
Students who intend to complete the full course must take one other 1.5-hour class every week throughout both Sessions I and II (Total of 48 hours of additional
instruction).

ELIGIBILITY & APPLICATION PROCESS –
 
The Advanced Yoga Studies Program is offered to those students who wish to gain a deeper understanding of Yoga philosophy, principles and the practice.
 
Minimum eligibility is at least one year of dedicated yoga practice, a completed application (see attached), and personal interview and approval by the Director of
Brentwood Yoga Center. 
 
Brentwood Yoga Center reserves sole right to accept or reject any application for the program. 
 
TUITION & REGISTRATON –
 
Tuition for the entire 32-week Program is $2,400.00.   Tuition includes all classes on the schedule (including the one 1.5 hour class per week from the Director).  
 
Entire tuition is due no later than February 27th 2010.  Minimum deposit is $600.00 due no later than January 31st, 2010.  
 
Early Tuition Discount – 
 
Tuition paid in full on or before January 31st, 2010 there is a $120 discount - $2,280.  Brentwood Yoga Center accepts cash, checks, MasterCard or VISA for tuition payment.
 
CANCELLATION POLICY -  
 
Cancellation before February 27th, 2010 - A full refund of all tuition paid (less $100.00 administration fee) will be given if student cancels before February 27th, 2010.  
 
Cancellation on or after February 27th, 2010 - A 50% refund of all tuition paid will be refunded if we are unable to re-fill your attendance with another qualified student.   If we are able to re-fill your space with another qualified student after February 27th, 2010, you will receive a full refund of all tuition paid (less a $100 administration fee).
 
PROGRAM INSTRUCTORS – 
 
Sandy Carmellini - Owner, Director of Brentwood Yoga Center. She is a graduate from the Advanced Studies Teacher Program at the Yoga Room in Berkeley (a three-year training program with over 1000 hours of training).  She has been teaching yoga since 1998.  She has held many yoga retreats and workshops in California, Hawaii, Sedona, Mexico and Italy!  Her 18 years of experience as a corporate facilitator adds to her passion for training and educating others.  Sandy’s background in dance enhances her teaching style where she sequences movement and breath while focusing on detail.  Her instruction is accepting and fun and very educational.  Classes are taught primarily in the Iyengar method which focuses on creating healthy movement and balance in the body by using props (if necessary) to allow comfort and stability in poses.  
 
Kate Coughlin – 500hr –ERYT - is the Director of Downtown Yoga and is the acting Director of all Downtown Yoga teaching programs.  She received her B.S. degree in Dance from Evergreen State University in Washington in 1972.  Kate spent much of the 70’s traveling between Hawaii, Alaska, Seattle and Europe.  During this time she was fortunate to meet and be touched by Swami Muktananda, Indra Devi and Oscar Ichazo.  Kate performed and taught modern dance in Seattle prior to moving to California in 1985.   
 
In 1989, Kate developed the Yoga Program at Stanford University.  She taught hundreds of students at Stanford from 1989 until spring of 2000 when she moved to Pleasanton, California with her husband and twin daughters.  Kate founded Downtown Yoga in March of 2002.  She is a graduate of Erich Schiffman’s Teacher Training program.  Kate continues to develop her practice by taking pranayama and asana classes from Donald Moyer at the Yoga Room in Berkeley, California.
 
 
Jim Coughlin-200hr -ERYT: Jim was introduced to yoga in 1967 at the age of 10. He began practicing yoga in earnest in 1993. Jim has traveled to India extensively to expand his knowledge of yoga with his teacher Arun H.S.. Jim teaches yoga with a
sense of humor and grounded in the fundamentals of the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, the Bhagavad Gita, and the teachings of B.K.S. Iyengar.
